Intermezzo – G100 Flips + Uncomped Trax of GPF-Comps

After borderlining into the ridiculous (Juanita Banana) and even downright masochism (Pete Best) , to compensate everybody who has patiently suffered without complaining (or sending in bad comments), here’s something of THE REAL THING! This post is dedicated to the guys at the G45 Central-Forum (http://www.g45central.com), specially to the makers of “private” compilations that have become much sought for, and to those who thought of re-upping them. Massive thanks go out to Masterbeat64, Chuck C, Expo67, and JeffMiami who did, respectively, SOUNDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE – $ 300 FINE – KWOGMYRE – JEFF‘S FLORIDA FLASHBACKS and SIXTIES GARAGE BEAT, to pfft for doing the re-upps, and to BossHoss for generously posting selected flip-sides of the “100 best 45s of Garage” (G100). I hope you won’t mind that I had to flatten the audio-quality from flac to mp3 in order to get an overall-sound-volume. Who wants the original comps in flac, can go to http://www.g45central.com/forum/index.php?threads/still-looking-for-those-elusive-g100-tunes-groan-not-this-guy-again.246/ (G100-Flips) or to http://www.g45central.com/forum/index.php?threads/forum-comp-directory.572 (GPF-comps) (you have to register tho’). So here’s some crude, snotty, fuzz-laden, trippy, fratty, moody, angry, classic US-GARAGE, enjoy the REAL THING (or, at least, its flip-sides)!

UC 148/149 - Swedish Delights, pt. 1+2

Next stop-over on our flight through the time-warp: Sweden. For residents, some of the sounds collected here maybe familiar but I guess people living outside the land will dissent from JJ Burnell of the Stranglers (who had a Swedish member in their original line-up) who called Sweden “….the only land where the clouds are interesting” (meaning: the land, where only …). So get ready for a double-package of more or less uncompiled sounds, with a hodgepodge of original 45s, selected anthology-tracks plus some live-recordings and TV-clips. (Actually, seems that Swedish radio and television, as the film-industry, were quite open minded towards youth-culture in the 60s, and you can find great clips of many of the tracks featured here at Youtube (go to http://swedishbeat.wordpress.com). (Don’t miss the incredible, wild Wipe-Out-version by the 14 year old Caretakers and The Strangers with Go Go Girls at http://www.youtube.com/user/wasaexpress (scroll down). Enjoy Swedish Delights!

zzz Werewolf by Night comics

I know I’m late and the party’s long over, but there’s always the day after, right? So here’s my selection of 24 premier trash-instro-tracks, scratchy platters left in a pool of sick and booze, perfect for a heavy hangover, the real meal for fiends like us. Moans from putrefied mummies, lecherous looks from the undead, spooky strolls down Blood Alley, and scary Succubus, who/whatever that is, you’ll find out. Most of this creepy mix was and still is posted at http://www.youtube.com/user/scratchyoldies, go and check his awesome collection, I just picked the more monsterish trax out of 500 rare rockabilly- and prebeat-sounds. So now, let the blinds down, grab some of the half-empty cans from the floor, down the warm beer and let’s enjoy the trash-fest all over again. ‘Cos everyday is Halloween, if you only want to!

PS: My pal J.R. Williams who told me that some of the trax are not original 45s but fakes (from the 70s? even later?) posted by scratchyoldies to fool collecters is most probably right. Anyway, scratchy sure did a pretty good job at it, so I decided not to delete them from the list.

UC151/UC152 – Beat from the Boot – parts 1 & 2

zzzz Dal-palco

Here’s a hodgepodge of swinging Mozarella-Beat, Pasta&Pomodoro-Pop and some deep Spaghetti-Soul, all sung in Italiano (if you count Sardinian in). Originally, I wanted to dub this double-pack “Perdenti d’Italia / Losers of Italy”, but then again, some of the songs here actually made it to national or European song-festivals. Another teasing title was the Delfini’s “We’re Rebels ‘cos Fashion says so” tho’ I hope this controversial and politically most uncorrect claim was just a desperate attempt to get a slot in the national RAI-TV which was (in)famous for censorship and bans (go asks Mister Anima or Thane Russall). Anyway, I’m pretty sure some of my friends (ciao Vince, Old Capellon, Aldo Reale and my friend from Turino!) will enjoy these sounds here, despite the poor audio-quality (mostly hand-ripped from YouTube). Say grazie tante to http://www.youtube.com/user/mmasimo (rivista Beati Voi), http://www.youtube.com/user/italianbeat , http://www.youtube.com/user/LeIntrovabili4 , http://www.youtube.com/user/cuculo48due , http://www.youtube.com/user/MrMARCODONDI et al. So stash these here platters in your micro-oven, put a pizza on your turntable, and dig the Beat from the Boot!
PS: Sorry for the booklet all in Italiano, I just was too lazy…

To start the new year, let’s take a SAA-ticket (first class, of course) and fly to Johannesburg and Durban in the 60s. You might have heard a good deal of the 28 tacks collected here, specially on the BeatinRock (or is that RockinBeat?)-series. I selected the ones that are missing on the few “official” SA-samplers (skipping the instrumentals) and I think we’ll get a most delightful menu with a few pretty rare dishes, such as the marvelous platter by the Fives (no info) and the awesome version of I’m Crying by the Secrets which can absolutely cope even with the Animals’ treatment I reckon. No liner-notes this time, I was too lazy. Hope you’ll dig this collection nevertheless. If not, drop me a line. Enjoy!

zz Caravelles_pic

For much too long I left the Girls behind, so here’s the first of three volumes dedicated to Ladies with a Beat! From Finland to Japan, from Turkey to New Zealand, from Germany to Mexico, in a time-warp from 63 to 74, I have selected girl groups and female voices that (mostly) didn’t make it to the official compilations. Strangely, the strict alphabetical order doesn’t spoil the overall-listening-fun I guess, most probably it’s that unique girlie touch which keeps it all together …? Once more, this selection proves that girls and brass fit greatly and you’ll get many a sounds with a strong beat and an urge to invade the dancing-floor. I’ll unleash volumes II and III in a few days, until then, I hope you’ll dig the first charge. Thanks to all bloggers and youtubers mentioned in the booklet, with special greetings to Graham Welch of the extraordinary http://www.readysteadygirls.eu and my pal, his highness the Lolly Pope from Roots and Traces http://spurensicherung.blogspot.it/ who kindly sent me some rare uncomped beauties.

Delrays
Time to go back to the serious stuff…get a load of Garage-Gems from the USofA, some wild some mild, all never been compiled before (as far as I’m aware). Indeed, it’s marvelous that after nearly 50 years (really?) even some acetates continue to come up and if you only dig deep enough you will still find a lot of gold in the mines. Which is the famous g45 forum, 60sgaragebands.com, my friend’s Darren Brennessel’s archive, and heaps of dedicated youtubers and bloggers (all named in the booklet attached). Don’t be too harsh about the audio-quality, never use headphones, set your set to midrange (and to mono!), and turn up the volume! More US-gems in the can, stand by!

UC158 – French Cuts

zzz Les Swifts_pic
Back in France again, not only Paris but also Marseille, Rhône-Alpes, Mulhouse, Allier, and the Normandie-Region. In the 60s, mostly all French artits recorded “Extended Plays” (7”-EPs) with 4 songs and usually these came with glossy 4c-picture-sleeves. My fave track (maybe because my grandson‘s name?) is from singer Orlando, his version may sound a little lame at the start but soon you get aware he actually succeeds in turning the original Jagger-Richards-rant into kind of a “chanson”. And wait for the first drum-break. Astonishing. Don’t mind the Frenglish, neither the groups do, but enjoy a unique, often hilarious approach to Beat and Psychedelia. Mystery track is “Je n'ai pas su dire non"; youtube-channel “lesdemsoul bramhs” tags it as "Gale Garnett" who actually did record a song with the same title in France, but this can’t be her (unless she didn’t undergo a sex-change-surgery …). Any info is welcome. Thanks to the very fine site http://mixagesobsoletes.free.fr and to all bloggers and youtubers named in the booklet. Amusez-vous et profitez du spectacle!

Hello out there, this is your friendly undertaker once again. We don’t need Halloween to unleash the creeps, do we? So get a new load of monsters of all unkind, a few of’em appeared on some lesser known compilation but if you’re not exactly a doo-whop-fiend you might appreciate to encounter them in this here goulish gathering. Exceptionally, some rose from their tombs in the late 50s (and a few in the early 70s) but wait until you hear Mark IV moaning from Dante's Inferno! So, like Fred Fingers Lee says, let me take you for a spin, I’ll bury you deep and cheap!

RIP Werner Voran aka The Lolly Pope

the saddest news I can think of, my friend the Lolly Pope aka Werner Voran died 2 weeks ago from heartattack! I just talked to his girlfriend, still can't believe it but it's true. I never met Werner but we were like brothers and changed mails nearly every day. From the very first time I read the liner notes for PraeKrautPandaemonium, I loved his unique humor, and we shared precisely the same taste with music. I felt very proud when he asked me to do an "uncomped of Electrick Loosers"-sampler for which he sent me MCs from his archive*. I will miss him a lot, and the community of 60s- Garage music has lost one of the leading experts of German and British Beat and a generous master to look up to. I know many of you, just as myself, were waiting on the next volumes of his extraordinary "Beat Wunderbar / Tommknockers" -series (http://spurensicherung.blogspot.it) which now sadly ends at Vol 23. He has given me so many precious hours of Joy. Condolences go out to his friend Patti and his buddy Ralph Siemers. RIP Werner.

* in memory and honour of Werner I've reupped both samplers: http://www67.zippyshare.com/v/45053360/file.html (vol. 5) http://www29.zippyshare.com/v/41885048/file.html (vol. 6)

TOMMYKNOCKERS BEAT CLUB – THE RIP-EDITION, VOLUME 1

Unapproved but unforgotten corpora delicti from the catacombs
Tommyknockers RIP1_frontcover_cropped
As Detlef from Lohmar asked for, here’s the first set of three new Tommyknockers compilations. They’re in no way meant to substitute or even equal the incomparable knowledge and wit of my good friend the Lolly Pope but it seemed the best way to still feel him beside me. Since he had started the series, we exchanged 60s nuggets he had dug up from his “scruffy archive” and I used to send him presumable "Tommyknocker candidates" I had picked from the net. In this way, a friendship was established and the nearly daily charge of his amazing comments made of hilarious puns and dadaistic word-games were as important to me as was his unique selections of rare UK-gems. Thus, half of the tracks presented in this upcoming threepack have the Lolly Pope’s approval as they were planned to show up in one of the next Beat-Wunderbar-sequels or, at least, were taken into consideration, whereas the other half you’re gonna hear is tracks I was pretty sure would certainly please him. Even though we never met, we were “soulmates” and shared exactly the same, odd, taste in music (except for very few bands such as the Monks or Freddy & the Dreamers which would spark even more amazing discussions). I guess you can image how I miss him, and I’m sure many of you will, and this effort here should bring back the same spirit of the Tommyknockers series and that unique, all-British Beat Wunderbar-sound, at least for three new installments of un-compiled and luckily un-lost Tommyknockers. Parts 2 and 3 coming up in a few days. I hope you’ll dig this postumus-edition and I hope the Pope will send his blessings. Ego me absolvo.

Tommyknockers RIP2_frontcover_cropped
As promised, here‘s Volume 2 of the Un-Lost Tommyknockers. I hope you’ll excuse me for breaking a rule here, as the Lolly Pope never posted 2 tracks of the same group one after the other, but I thought separating both sides of the hilarious Bend-It-versions would kind of spoil the fun. Apart from the Potatoes, my fave tracks here are the Muleskinners’ Untie Me and the great Leaving Here-cover by the fabulous and underrated Favourite Sons (Get some more, equally amazing cover-versions by this splendid Mod-ensemble on Youtube!). Final part 3 coming up next week. Enjoy UK-Beat Wunderbar!

Tommyknockers RIP3_frontcover_cropped

So here’s the final volume of my Tommyknockers-RIP-edition. To be honest with you, I feel quite disappointed. Something more that 200 downloads per volume ain’t a bad rate for this little site here, but frankly speaking I did expect a little bit more than just two comments by Detlef from Lohmar and Joe from Kiel. Even some harsh remarks would have been ok since I’m aware all my best efforts could never reach the same high of the original series. Neither Werner’s closed buddies showed any reaction although I hoped they would post this set as an "in memoriam"- follow-up on Werner’s own Roots & Traces / Spurensicherung- blog (at least, his friend Pätti sent me some photos of the clearly camera-shy Pope). Anyway, I hope the ones who downloaded did appreciate, and for me it was the best way to honor Werner and to keep our friendship alive. So enjoy the show, mein Lieber , and have a nice cold beer on me (I hope they’ll serve your favorite brand tho’…)
