UC161/162 - Belgian Truffles, pts. 1 and 2

zz The Echo's

The term truffles might be a little overstated here tho I’m sure you’ll find some pretty solid beat and pop the Belgian 60s scene is famous for. While delivering tamer sounds than their Dutch neighbors and lacking that over the top-approach of their French workmates, the Belgian groups stuck to their beat-roots even when everybody else had long time opted for the so called “progressive” tag, so even many tracks recorded in 1969 and 1970 sound as if there were cut 2 or 3 years earlier (in other words: are still enjoyable). Compiling this double-feature I’ve skipped the instrumental recordings (not that I don’t dig instros!) and tried to avoid overlappings with most appreciable series such as Flanders’ 60 Beat Generation (Hi Eddy!), Beat It If You Can (both series recently posted at the Old Melodies-blog), and Psych & Psychedelic Music Beat in Belgium by Buffalo Billycan. So go order some sprouts with a nice Belgium beer and enjoy the mixes!

Time again for some sultry girly voices from Germany enhanced by big brass and a danceable beat. I’m sure even if you're not familiar with the German tongue you will yet get your fun out of this very particular mix. Most of the tunes have been dug out by top-expert Jens Keller who long ago had started the Vergessene Mädchen-blog, now replaced by his own fb-site (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beat-Fr%C3%A4uleins/178109245586213?fref=ts) and Youtube-channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/kraftwerk2012). Unfortunately, I was not able to contact him, anyway I hope he’ll be happy with my selection. Enjoy more lost girls from Deutschland!

Hola aficionados del yé-yé espagnol! I’m a big fan of Miguel López Pérez‘ site http://66spanishgarage.blogspot.it picking tracks that have eluded the official and also most private compilations and adding a few extra-tracks. I’ve just noticed I forgot to post volume 3 here, so now you’ll get a double-pack of rare tracks from the Spanish 60s. I’m sure Miguel will be happy about my selections as he once wrote me it’s nice to hear his gems all in a row. So say muchas gracias to my pal Miguel (drop him a line!) and enjoy more cool Beat from Spain!

Here’s a selection of 60s’ instros from the fabulous Cicedelico Obscure Grooves-blog (http://cicodelico-obscure-grooves.blogspot.it).I hope the fellow who runs this blog (I couldn’t find out neither his name nor an email-address, German, maybe?) will give his blessings. Sure he’s got a much wider taste than I do offering some pretty cool tracks from the days of RnR to Garage-revival-bands. I have picked 51 gems (some surf, some novelty-tracks, some intensive drumming) and I’m convinced they make up a truly awesome double-set. I tried to avoid overlappings with renown (Surf-) samplers although you might find some on Titty Twisters or similar compilations.
Hope you’ll dig the twang. Don’t forget to say thanks and hello to Mr. Cicodelico.

Too Much Monkey Business – 38 Great Artists!

Monkey's back

“Too Much Monkey Business”, just as “I’m a Hog For You Baby” (take this for a warning!), has been one of my favorite songs since 1964 and has been a staple in the play-list of the various combos I played with. Hence, I couldn’t resist to do a monothematic collection, challenging you to cope with 38 versions in a row without getting seasick. My good pal Michael Zee from http://garagetapes.blogspot sent me half of the tracks compiled here. I admit my work is far from his awesome “The Louie Louie-Tapes-collection” (107 + 17 versions!), which made me discover that Louie Louie, more than a song, is actually a structure open to build individual versions upon, some with key-changes, some with different instrumentation, even with sitar (get’em, you won’t regret it!). What both songs have in common tho’ is the “experimentation” with the language. When the top-poet of RnR (Chuck, of course) penned this song of youth-rebellion, he probably didn’t image what he had sparked. Even though, except for Portugal’s Satins (tho’ the singer sounds Brit to me) I didn’t find any versions by francophone or Spanish-speaking artists (or from Asia, can you imagine?), although the German Bats or the Dutch Triffits perfectly prove you don’t have to worry about your language-skills as the rebellious message would get through anyway, even if some, like Masters Apprentices, morph it into a girl-put down-anthem (“…to much MB to be involved WITH YOU!”). So I hope dadaistic wording, off-key-language and even an odd version sung in the local dialect of Frankfurt (The King-Beats) will add fun to the Monkey Businesses.

zz Dave Da Costa 1964
Although this little site here is not intended to become an affiliate of http://66spanishgarage.blogspot.it/, since my last selection just one month ago Miguel Lòpez Pérez has posted quite a lot of new (i.e. uncompiled) tracks from the Spanish 60s which simply are too good to elude you. So here’s a new set of Beat, (aka yé yé) and Garage, mixed with a little bit of Soul and Pop. I hope Miguel will keep up his great labor of love (drop him a line, it feels good to get some feed back from time to time), and I’m sure you’ll dig installment n# 5 as much as I do. Con mis mejores saludos a mi colega y amigo!

zz American Beetles_
Back again in the US, with 30 shiny gems that should be brand new to your ears (at least they were to mine). In fact, I might also drop the (mostly)-tag this time as all tracks here should be uncompiled, several are not even mentioned in the Holy Bible of Garage, i.e. Mike Markesich’s encyclopedia Teen Beat Mayhem (any further information on the whereabouts of the Bunches a Good, Jacob’s Investment, Krels, Missing Lynx, is much appreciated). As you’ll see, this time all tracks are simply put in an alphabetic order (don’t know why but to create a special play-list is the part I like less of my work, maybe because I love to hear the tracks all in a row as if it was for the first time, once I’ve finished the research and the booklet-job). You might also notice that the order is from A to O which means there will be a second part soon. So enjoy the show, and let me know if you really want more inapt, innocent, raw but genius sounds from the American 60s…

As promised, here’s some more US Gems, again in alphabetic order (more or less). Probably quite a hodgepodge of different styles, but what you get is 60 (!) tracks that have eluded compilers, I believe (you might be familiar with a few if you follow Mike Dugo’s wonderful 60 Garagebands-site). Huge thanks to the community of Garage-heads who continue to share their treasures via various blogs, youtube-channels and the G45 forum (all mentioned in the booklets attached). Any update on the missing information is much appreciated. Thank you Michael Zoot / Garagetapes for fixing the flaws of part 2. Dig the Fuzz!

UN-LOST TOMMYKNOCKERS – THE RIP-EDITION, VOLUME 4

zzz frontcover
Right between two years, I couldn’t think of a better point in time to honor the Lolly Pope, creator of the un-forgettable original Beat Wunderbar / Tommyknocker-series, so here’s another RIP-edition I hope you won’t disdain. Unlike the previous 3 issues, the tracks I collected here were not on The Pope’s short-list but I’m pretty sure they might have been candidates or, at least, he would (will?) love to hear more sounds from some of his fave beat-combos from England. I just could resist the temptation to include some of my and Werner’s all time favorite bands so you might be familiar with several of the 32 tidbits I have chosen. Still I hope you’ll also find a few unheard gems, such as by the Pathfinders, the Sherwoods or the Shevelles. More info in the booklet attached, and lots of nice photos of the bands. Huge thanks go out to 94MikeJ and Fuzz Vag who generously share their collections on Youtube. So get ready for a marvelous new year, and I’d like to thank all my friends who appreciate this little site and send me their comments and corrections. Peace!

Los Diana & Tom
My pal Miguel from Madrid continues to baffle me with more rarities from the Spanish 60s. I’ve got no clue where he digs them up but sure I won’t complain. As he’s got a much wider taste than me, I have once again done a selection focusing on Beat, Garage and a little Syke from 64 to 68. So get another charge of that essential approach the Spanish yé yé-combos are famous for, mixed with some cover-versions and a few pretty funny original tunes that should deliver good listening pleasure. For the rest, the Shakers’ “Yeah!” at he end of No volveré says it all. Muchas gracias, of course, to Miguel at http://66spanishgarage.blogspot.it/, keep your mojo workin’ mate!

The Zoo at the Whiskey A GoGo, Athens

If you still think The Greek 60s scene was mostly Jenka and half-assed cover versions then you should hit the download-button right now! I love the Greek Beat combos as they had a pretty unique sound, less aping the English or American RnB-bands than in other parts of the Mediterranean, more Zombies than Yardbirds, as someone said before (me myself, in the notes to pts. 1 and 2 of this series).
Except one, I don’t think any of these tunes here have been compiled before. I found most of the tracks on several Youtube-channels, specially by Alexandros Leodak (http://www.youtube.com/user/1983hippys), Nik Pat (http://www.youtube.com/user/nick270760) , modzm391( http://www.youtube.com/user/modzm391), Sarrios 29 (http://www.youtube.com/user/SARROS29) , aris60&70 (http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCh7uHjPkOu8bMigKQaH2NlA),and 7707George (http://www.youtube.com/user/7707george), thank you guys. A huge thank you goes out to my pal Michael Zoot of the precious http://garagetapes.blogspot.it/ who did an essential job by sending me fotos and rips for better audio-quality and by transcribing and translating group-names and song-titles giving me some interesting additional information (see separate file attached). He also pointed out that the last track on this set (Red Rose The Group) was actually Skip Battin & Group from the US so the only connection to Greek might be the (Turkish) record label. Anyway, as Skip’s raga-raveup nicely links to tracks #18 and 23, I decided to break the rule hoping you’ll dig this new visit to Greece as much as I do.

zz Baronetti
Who would have thought we’d spend some more time in Greece? I have to thank my namesake Michael from garagetapes.blogspot who sent me what must be his complete archive of Greek 60s bands. (Asking him which tunes he’d suggest for this new installment he told me he’d never listen to Greek bands!). With his daily (and nightly) mails of encouragement and suggestions and his good humor (translations and transcriptions a part) he successfully helped me to endure what’s a rough time for me. So this new installment is a proof of good friendship for all of you to share. After part 3, I was afraid to do a new Greek compilation would end up like scraping the bottom of the barrel, but I hope you’ll agree that the result actually has become another interesting example of that unique approach of the Greek beat-combos, to my ears closer to Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, Turkey and also France than to England and the USA. Enjoy!

This should be a joy for collectors, for sure it was a pain in the ass of the archivist*). Scratchy tunes from worn-out acetates, mostly from the US (I guess), with no clue on groups’ names and hardly an idea about song titles. I’m still wondering why the gems collected here didn’t make it to vinyl. Surprisingly, the overall audio quality ain’t that bad at all, and moreover, something like magic happened (to quote our DJ Bertha, don’t miss her!) as the mould and the dust clutched to the grooves sometimes give the nearly 50 years old artifacts a trippy, intensifying extra-kick (as on the instro track and on “My Girl Jill”). Not surprisingly the booklet to this comp doesn’t yield much of information. So here’s the challenge: I’ve added an "info-sheet" that can be returned after filling out some of the blank spaces. Any hint will be much appreciated, just don’t forget to state the source and your (nick)name. (I’ve put the original Youtube-links in the mp3-tags, but don’t expect to find much helpful information there). I will update the tracklist at this site every time a new list comes in. So don't mind the scratches and hiss, enjoy the show and help to shed some light in the darkest corner of the Garage! I promise I will pay full royalties once we know more about the artists and their exact addresses!

*) As too many tracks of the previous set had been compiled before, I’ve done a Mark II version featuring hopefully all unknown, unpublished tracks. Special thanks go out to my expert friend Michael Zoot at Garagetapes.blogspot for dividing known and unknown tracks / groups. I couldn’t have done it without him.

This new set is to show that the treasure trove of not yet compiled garage tracks still is a bottomless well, to quote the Kan-Dells (although their tune here seems more a hymn to a nightclub of dubious reputation). As usual, I’ve picked some 60s sounds from the US that hopefully are new to your ears, starting with two innocent but nice Chuck Berry covers to some classic Brit-invasion tunes and some most hilarious frat sounds. Be warned though since the party might end in desperate tragic, as the last 4 tracks taken from a rare 33 rpm acetate prove. Enjoy nevertheless!

This is a long overdue ode to my all time hero Joe Meek. Back in last year’s November, Phil Milstein had collected 23 Telstars tunes for his fine blog "Probe is Turning-On the Peoeple" (http://www.philxmilstein.com/probe). I’ve added some more versions from my archive sending it all to my pal Michael Zoot from garagetapes.blogspot who dug up more rare Telstars from far away parts of the globe such as Nicaragua, Finland and Costa Rica making ít up to 31,5 stellar tracks. So buckle up, check ignition, and push the go-button! (and don’t send me any more versions, I won’t handle it!)

As far as I’m aware, apart from the original Simla Beat Contest-samplers there had never been other compilations focusing on Indian teen combos from the 60s. Recently though, Florian Pittner of the amazing hindustanib-music.blogspot proved that you can find never compiled 60s gems between Bollywood and temple music if you only dig deep enough. I understand he visits India on a regular basis searching for vinyl and sharing his findings at his blogsite. From the various genres, I selected the tunes that might be tagged “Beat”, “Pop” or “Psychedelia” adding a few more tracks I found at Bobby Mudgel’s Youtube channel and here you go with a set of 26. Compared to Pop sounds from other Far East Nations (say Thailand, or Cambodia) these tunes here are better accessible as Indians speak (and sing) quite perfectly English. Which does not mean there’s no mysteries or strangenesses to discover, once you’ve decided to abandon yourself to the Indian timewarp…
(Again, special thanks go out to Michael Zoot of the Garagtapes-blogspot who added even more tracks and did his best to fix the pops).

After some extensive trips around the globe, here we are back again in Europe with another homage to my good friend and spiritual companion, The Lolly Pope. I’m 99% sure he would select (again, note the present tense!) the same forgotten combos featured here, not complaining about some Irish mates and Scotsmen in between the Brits. Same goes for the alphabetical order I guess as the Limey sound sticks it all together perfectly. Prepare for some rare gems I’ve fished from the net, together with some missing information on the fugitive artists (and nice pictures, too). Again, this set comes with a 14 pg booklet, all YouTubers and bloggers who generously share their treasures mentioned (thank you, partners). I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy another drive on the left side of the road!

Don’t let the picture (showing the famous ‘64 Briton clash between Mods and Rockers) get you on the wrong track. This ain’t a selection of British Mod faves but my pick of highly danceable tunes from (mostly) the US, for sure to file under the Soul-tag. I’ve never understood what’s the difference between Blue Eyed Soul, Northern Soul and Deep Soul, for me it’s simply the sounds I’d love to hear at a party. Over the top-productions with hilarious singing, heavy on the brass, inviting you to Move and do the Jerk, the Shing-a-ling, the Boogaloo, and le Monkiss. I’ve collected all these tracks randomly since years now not so much focusing on the rareness but just on that cool Mod approach. Remember this little blog started with UC001 – The Mod Syde, and here’s more. You’re invited to the Mod Party! All dudes driving a Vespa (like me) or a Lambretta will get free drinks! Put your hands on your hip, shake your legs, put your right foot in the air, put your left foot behind your right foot, let your backbone slip, and, mostly, maintain your cool and have fun!!!!!

INTERVAL – KID’S HITS! A Child’s Guide to Garage Music, pts. I & II

KId's Hits 1+2, covers_edited
Strictly for kids, Garageheads stay away! This series is meant to approach kids (such as my two grandsons) to sounds I hope they’ll dig better than the traditional kiddies’ tunes and introduce them to garage (in other words: to the best music there is!). What they’ll get is good fun, and some ass kickin’ movers (sorry for the language kids) you might classify loosely under the novelty tag. Actually tho’, the musical frame of this series has been slightly widened to include more genres like Ska, Twist, Surf, and even Bossa Nova, Cha Cha and Tango, with some Surfer Birds, Shortning breads and Gamma Goochies packed in. It must be my childish mind to make me love these sounds collected here since I had tried to suggest the series to some of my friends getting mostly a lukewarm feedback. Instead, it seems kids love to join in the singing and get good fun out of the oddities featured here. The best prove of appreciation comes from my 7yo grandson who picked the Italian version on the Martian tale as his fave sing-a-long tune asking his female coed if she knew “Il Surf del Marziano”… So never mind the Jenka, the Madison, the Hula and even La Bostella, and remember: This is for kids! (you might still send me your comments tho’…)
