60s (mostly) uncomped

Back to the serious stuff! It might be true that many of these uncomped tracks might earn no more but 2 or 3 stars (of the TBM bible) but anyway I guess it’s safe to say you will most probably find some real unheard killers that have slipped the compilers’ net or have been unearthed just recently. Again, thanks go out to all who have contributed (and are mentioned in the booklet), with special thanks and congrats to Dan at Dan’s Garage who kindly suggested my little site in the foreword of his recent #100 edition (Note: I avoid overlappings with well worthy compiler goldmines such Garagetapes.blogspot and the aforementioned theegarage.blogspot as I assume you will get your favorite dishes from there).

Welcome to another borderline installment. This set is trying to harvest some eatable fruit from a typical German genre dubbed Beat Schlagers. German Schlager-Stars in the attempt to jump on the Beat train, heaps of mostly watered down cover versions, often done by unnamed bands or studio musicians who recorded for budget labels such as Tempo or Hit. Anonymous VA-samplers with ramshackle mixes of the latest hits, as recorded by well known singers hiding behind pseudonyms or by musicians and bands who did not even get a listing. Add some novelty songs for your weekly beer party, some bouncy stompers to annoy your neighbor and a good load of “melancholic” melodies and you get an idea of the German Schlager market. Admitting that this set will deliver most amusement if you understand German I still hope there’s enough fun left for any true Beat aficionado. Don’t despair!

When my pal Michael Zoot announced he’d send me a bunch of “tunes that seem not to fit in any of my posting plans” (i.e. of his fabulous GarageTapes Blogspot), I knew I’d soon hit big time! So actually it was an easy task to select the tracks I liked (20 out of 30) and after I spotted the terrific picture of Jim Dandy and his Dad aka the Sugar Beats recording right in their living room (and not in their garage!), I knew a new sequel of Uncomped goodies was ready to go. No doubt Colonel Tom Parker, Phinius & the Flashbacks or the Deuces Wild, as all the other artists gathered here, for one reason or another are not exactly what you would dub Garage but still I believe their outings deliver fun and have class and are too precious to disappear in oblivion. So dig the Non-Garage, for this time!

Back in the garages (and cheap recording studios) of the USA with a mix of Teen tunes from the 60s. Although quite a hodgepodge of various genres, the common denominator of this set should be fun, and rarity. In fact, as far as I know none of the tracks have ever been compiled before and there’s a good chance you’ll hear them for the first time ever while a lot even miss a mention in the bible (TeenBeatMayhem, that is). As usual, I’ve collected these gems, together with some nice band shots and short bios, from the net with references to all sites, blogspots, forums and Youtube channels in the 12 pg booklet attached. I’m afraid I’m completely hooked on girl singers and girl groups so when I spotted WFMU Rock 'n' Soul Ichiban’s Crayons to Perfume podcasts, I was knocked out before the first round was over (see http://wfmuichiban.blogspot and http://djgirlgroupgirl.blogspot). Every Wednesday from 7 to 8 pm DJ extraordinaire Glynis GirlGroupGirl spins a truly awesome selection of Tamla Motown, Soul, Pop, Surf, Beat and Garage 60s tunes as done by female groups and girl singers from all over the world (get the complete audio streaming at http://wfmu.org/). After 32 shows I just couldn’t resist the temptation to pick some never compiled tracks, tho’ this time the rarity factor is a little bit lower than usual as I decided to throw a few better known tracks in the mix to give it an extraspin. Still you’ll get a big bunch of rare sounds here, I’m sure you won’t complain. Kindly, Glynis gave her blessings to my selection admitting she had used some tunes found at this here site for her radio show which made me feel quite honored. So say thanks to Glynis, and remember to tune in to her live-show next Wednesday for more tasty girl group tunes.

Back to Old Blighty again. Since the Lolly Pope left this world quite exactly 2 years ago, this is my 6th effort to hold the Union Jack high by continuing to select tunes that should get his blessings from above. Let’s take another leap across the pond. This new sequel again proves that the troops of the British Beat Invasion had landed at the Normandy only to find out the Croques Monsieurs had learned the lesson long before (as Jacques Dutronc et al show) and now were fighting back using their own, sometimes sublimely insidious weaponry. You know what I mean. As usual, French menus come with 4 courses, named super 45 tours (extended four track plays, that is) which makes the meal lustfully luscious. Get ready for another trip to Asia. On the itinerary are Manila, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Djakarta, Seoul, Phnom Penh (hi Uli!) and Colombo. (I was happy to learn Colombo’s posh Galle Face Hotel which I visited in 1980 once hosted A go-go combos!). As the bulk of this double set generated in the Philippines, this time you’ll hear mainly anglophile sounds and many local cover versions of our favorite hits. Don’t worry tho’, most get a special treatment (like Gloria and Satisfaction, for instance) and it’s the sometimes subtle differences that make up STYLE and make me appreciate the originals even more. You judge. I must not forget to thank websites, bloggers and Youtube channels for generously sharing their treasures; I’ve listed the sources in a file attached so you might extend the research by yourself. Thanks as well to my mate Michael Zoot from garagetapes.blogspot for cleaning layers of sticky curry rice off the platters. Finally and exceptionally, as a bonus, I have added two extra tracks that were not recorded in the 60s but are too tasty to be lost in oblivion. I really would love to get some data on the incredible tune that closes set #6, and maybe some feed back from Asian residents…. Hala Hala!

…ok, you’ll also get chicks from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and even Thailand and Japan. At any rate, I guess it’s mostly singers from China (which means Hong Kong, I suppose?) that were eluded by fame and fortune (or even banned) in their home country so they toured South East Asia recording with more or less famous (instro) combos that were frequently used as backing bands. With many undecipherable names and song titles, this special edition comes along with numerous void spaces and question marks although I did my best to identify (and reproduce) at least the records the 40 tracks were taken from. I would much appreciate some helping by any Asian speaking person and I’m not even sure if the bulk of the tunes I collected are sung in Mandarin language or maybe Hokkien spoken in the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. I’m quite sure tho’, once you’ve pitched your ears a little higher you will enjoy this further foray into the world of Hala Hala. Probably you won’t file these tunes under the Garage tag but they definitely will not sound out of place played in a row with recordings by garage groups from the UK or the US, and anyone (like me) who digs Ska and (Roots) Reggae will surely get his dose of fun. Also, many recordings remind me of French Yé Yé, say France Gall, and I wonder if this is just by case or intended? Anyway, I hope you’ll enjoy my China Chicks as much as I do. Taking a big leap exactly towards the north of the hemisphere, we once again explore Canada in the 60s. Sounds like our Canadian comrades were more impressed by the Beatles than the Rolling Stones, and more by the Zombies than Them, but I don’t blame them for that. In fact, many of the tunes gathered here might remind you of the Fab 4, and if you can forgive some of the bands for dressing up in French flic-uniforms, for sporting pink hair, or wearing ancient Roman costumes on stage, I guess good listening fun will be the reward. As I’m aware I’ve got some faithful followers living on the northern side of the globe (Marc, rntcj) I have tried to collect some sounds that hopefully might be unheard even by Canadian residents. At any rate, all 28 tunes should be uncomped*, tedious series as “Les Introvables” (not availabe in Europe) apart. So once again, dig the cool sounds of Canada brothers and sisters!

After 1 and a half year, here‘s another sequel of uncomped Spanish yé-yé featuring 30 grabaciones I picked from Miguel López Pérez’s ongoing efforts at the fab 66spanishgarage.blogspot. Visiting his site, you will see that my namesake is offering his treasures not any more track by track but by creating thematic compilations dubbed The Spanish Garage Series. As with the previous volumes, covering the timewarp range 1962 – 68 I selected Beat and Pop tunes that have eluded both official and private compilers (at least according to my archive). I did not care if they had originally been published as single plays, extended plays or on albums. What was important to me was to get another collier of pearls that would prove the Spanish groups really had no reason to hide from their British or American comrades. I’m sure you’ll agree. Enjoy the set (and say muchas gracias to my mate Miguel!) Curiosity note: Apparently, the drummer on track #1 is no other that Greatful Dead’s own Mickey Hart who was stationed in Spain during his military service! Good job Mickey, if only you had remained with the Jaguars….

Here’s my contribution to the “comp worthy?” thread started a few weeks ago at the g45 forum (http://www.g45central.com). Probably not all of the 24 tunes I picked from the net may fit into the garage drawer but as far as I’m aware none of them have appeared on legit or private compilations. Put simply in alphabetical order, I would love to see (and hear) each and every single piece of these forgotten samples of teenage (sorry Bonnvilles and Jerry Merrit) mayhem and despair on one of the “official” compilations, certainly in improved audio quality, maybe within a specific contest and hopefully with some more info on the bands. For sure, I would be the first in line to buy a vinyl album or a silver platter. In other words, this selection here is not intended to compete with professionally made compilations but should serve more as an appetizer. Back to the serious stuff: Say thanks to Mrs. Lindy Lou from Greece for diggin’ up some rare Garage gems and posting them on her YouTube channel. She’s serving a most various menu of all genres of which I’ve selected 25 tunes that are (mostly) uncompiled so you probably will hear them here for the first time (unless you’re a frequent visitor of www.youtube.com/channel/UCygm0Sy_DkqJjzxw8PH-EaQ). As anticipated by the cover pic, from frat to ballads and from a couple of soulful tunes to distorted fuzz psyche, with some tremendous instros thrown in the mix, the common denominator of this set is a hypnotic / psychotic approach. I am sorry I forgot the Ladies, at least for a while. Anyway, here we go with 4 (!) installments with females singing (and, sometimes, playing). The tracks I selected were mostly never compiled before, although it’s not too difficult to find some uncomped girly tunes in the net. As you’ll see, my girls hail from all the world (except Germany, as I’m preparing a special German set), and I’ve rowed them up in alphabetical order as the girlie voices are like a red line so you won’t care too much about recording dates or places. I ‘m aware I state this most all of the time I finish an installment, but this double set might be the last of my Hala Hala series. I have widened the scope of this compilation a bit (that’s why the … and beyond tag) by adding some tunes from Japan and from Cambodia though it’s bit like juxtaposing tracks from Sweden and Turkey for a European sampler. Never say never. When I thought doin’ another sampler with uncomped German Beat tunes would mean scraping the bottom of the barrel I obviously was wrong. So here’s 52 more tunes from Germany, with many cover versions as you’d expect, including German Beat staples like Balla Balla, Woolly Bully,. Shakin 'all over, Shot Gun, and Drafi’s Shake Hands. 16 tracks come off anonymous Budget albums and EPs but we don’t mind, do we? All in all, this compilation gives a perfect idea of the music you’d hear between ‘64 and ‘66 when you visited Deutschland’s youth clubs, beat cellars, facilities of churches, community houses, school festivals, and a few pubs that would arrange concerts on weekends. I hope the German groups will once again prove their straight approach to Pop music, just listen to Yakety Yak or to the Silver Strings’ Lonesome me. As usual, you get a booklet with some info on the groups and many nice pictures (Germans love picture covers). So Sieg Heil my friends, let the beer flow and prepare for the Blitzkrieg!
